Around 20 per percent of all drivers killed on Victorian roads were aged 75 years or older. Older road users are considered to be at heightened risk due to the increase in frailty, fragility and the development or worsening of certain health conditions that can affect a driver’s ability to safely drive. Despite the ageing of the global population, modern society continues to promote and reinforce the use of ageist, outdated notions to define older people and dismiss their value. As such research was required to develop a narrative of Victoria’s older road users including the who, what and how to assist TAC in developing age-positive policies and programs. To meet this objective, Bastion Insights undertook a research study to better understand older road users. This consisted of three phases: 1. Firstly, we conducted a current and trend analysis for the next 5 years; 2. Secondly we conducted qualitative research comprising 19 group discussions and 36 in-depth interviews with Victorians aged 60+ (total n=125); 3. Finally, quantitative research was conducted via a 15-minute survey among n=772 Victorians aged 60+. Through the research Bastion Insights developed a holistic picture of Victoria’s older road users that showcased their diversity and identified priority segments in terms of risk and openness to behaviour change, to assist the TAC to develop age-positive road safety policies and programs as well as inform communications and other interventions that will support and promote their safety on the road.
