NINE UPFRONTS 2027 | BASTION’S KEY TAKEAWAYS

29 September 2026

At its 2027 Upfront, Nine presented a connected advertising proposition.
Its “Sofa to Street” strategy brings Television, Streaming, Publishing and Outdoor advertising together, giving brands a coordinated presence across screens and public spaces.

Nine is making the case for a greater share of the media plan by connecting its assets through audience targeting and buying technology.

STAN IS MOVING CLOSER TO THE CENTRE OF NINE’S ECOSYSTEM

With the introduction of an ad-supported tier creating a new advertising environment alongside its subscription offering.

Nine News will become available through Stan, while Stan Originals will open to brand integrations, creating opportunities to connect with audiences beyond spot advertising.

The Premiere League will remain on Stan until 2034.

EASIER BUYING RAISES THE IMPORTANCE OF SCRUTINY

The major tech announcement was Nine Neo, an AI powered trading platform designed to bring Nine’s media network into a single buying environment and simplify how advertisers plan, trade, and measure campaigns. Nine promised ‘outcomes’ based reporting within the platform.

There was mention of a partnership with network Seven on buying transparency and ensuring more media dollars are spent on working media instead of fees, but this is in its infancy, more to come on this likely at next years upfronts.

SPORT: THE BIGGEST YEAR YET

Sport remains one of Nine’s biggest weapons with a strong pipeline of long term rights like the NRL and NRLW to 2034.

Next year will see the Rugby and Netball World Cups on Australian soil, while the Ashes series will be broadcast from England during primetime.

There was a look ahead to the 2028 LA Olympics, with promotional activity set to ramp up next year.

FROM THE SOFA TO THE STREET

With the acquisition of QMS, it will now become ‘Nine Outdoor’, allowing for tighter and more consistent targeting across the network by using 9tribes to now target beyond the screen.

Nine’s retail network continues to expand, while dynamic News headlines will now be pushed to Nine Outdoor formats.

BASTION’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:

The addition of Nine Outdoor, 9tribes in Outdoor and Neo give advertisers easier access to integrated campaigns across formats, particularly where Sport or Entertainment can establish an audience connection that streaming and outdoor can reinforce.

Easier access to Nine’s portfolio increases the importance of deciding what each channel contributes and how success will be measured.

For brands, that potentially makes cross platform planning and buying simpler, however, the watchout, especially with Neo will be that simplest does not necessarily mean best – Planning decisions still require independent scrutiny, and it will be important to understand how Neo recommends inventory before any commitment.

There are new premium opportunities worth exploring beyond standard inventory. Advertising on Stan opens a high attention video environment that now offers brand integrations on Stan Originals.

Integration beyond standard spots will allow brands to embed themselves into key cultural moments.

The Sport calendar is very full for 2027 and gives brands an opportunity for sustained association and selective investment around key events. A crowded sporting year will make distinctiveness more important – presence alone will offer limited advantage if competitors occupy similar territory, so while access to Sport will be even easier on Nine next year, that makes the ‘way in’ even more important and needs careful consideration before implementing.
